Invictus — by William Ernest Henly

Invictus (Latin for ‘unconquered’)

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

This is one of my favourite poems. There is a strange power in these simple words that has replenished my self-belief and mental strength many times. I always feel that I am lucky to have such great poems, that help me in many ways. This poem truly makes one believe in the power of words.

If William Ernest Henly, a victim of tuberculosis of the bone at the age of 12, can “thank whatever gods may be For my unconquerable soul” then I should at least be thankful for my healthy body. His leg was amputated directly below the knee when he was 25 and he writes “Under the bludgeonings of chance My head is bloody, but unbowed.” I think I should at least think twice before complaining that my comfortable life is slightly disturbed. And the last four lines show the poet’s will to live and his strength. We all can learn something from this. This poem never gets old.

“It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.”
